Director
Robert McQueen scored a huge success in December with the premiere of Where Elephants Weep in
Phnom Penh,
Cambodia. Where Elephants Weep was created by Cambodian music composer Him Sophy, Franco-American librettist Catherine Filloux and
U.S. executive producer John Burt. McQueen met the team in
Phnom Penh in 2003 while he was travelling in
Asia, but the production didn’t get staged until 2008. Where Elephants Weep is
Cambodia’s first rock opera and blends rock music with the sounds of its traditional instruments.
Robert McQueen is known to Canadian audiences from his ground breaking production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, set among
British Columbia’s native people, for Vancouver
Opera. From Pnom Penh, McQueen heads to the Galaxy Theatre in
Tokyo where he will stage Carousel.
