Introduction“German tenor Robert Künzli was passionate and persuasive as Erik, Senta’s erstwhile, ordinary lover.” BiographyAustrian tenor Robert Künzli has performed extensively across Europe in leading roles and most recently returned to the Canadian Opera Company in the role of Erik in THE FLYING DUTCHMAN. For two years in a row Mr. Künzli was voted as one of the Singers of the Year in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for his performances in PETER GRIMES (title role), FIDELIO (Florestan) and FROM THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD (Luka Kuzmich) and DIONYSOS (Bassariden). Other recent performances include Loge in DAS RHEINGOLD with Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and Staatsoper Hannover, Kalaf in Busoni’s TURANDOT with Teatro de la Maestranza, the title role in PETER GRIMES, Florestan in FIDELIO and Luda Kuzmich in FROM THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD with Staatsoper Hannover. He has graced the stages of Semperoper Dresden, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Savonlinna Festival, Opéra Bastille, New York City Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Vienna State Opera to name just a few. Mr. Künzli’s roles include Bacchus in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, Alwa in LULU, the title role in LOHENGRIN, Fritz in DER FERNE KLANG and the title role in Schubert’s FIERRABRAS which he has performed at Carnegie Hall. His recordings include the title role in Carl Goldmark’s world premiere recording of MERLIN, and DVD recordings of DAS RHEINGOLD and DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE. Recent engagements include the title role in LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN with the Komische Oper Berlin and the title role in SIEGFRIED with Staatsoper Hannover and the Evangelist in Schmidt’s DAS BUCH MIT SIEBEN SIEGELN. Wagner figures prominently in his upcoming schedule with RHEINGOLD, SIEGFRIED, GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG and TANNHÜUSER in Hannover and Erik in FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER for Pacific Opera Victoria. Künzli will also be heard in TOTENHAUS, FIDELIO and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in various European centers.
