Introduction“…with Zach Finkelstein marshalling a lovely light tenor.” Opera Canada – Wayne Gooding BiographyIn 2008, American-born Canadian tenor Zach Finkelstein left his job as a political consultant in Toronto’s financial district to pursue the life of a professional vocal artist. Just three years later, Mr. Finkelstein made his international debut in the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center. This year's international engagements include operatic and concert work at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with the Mark Morris Dance Group, as well as his solo debut at Carnegie Hall for the Weill Institute's 'The Song Continues' workshop with Marilyn Horne, Renée Fleming, Graham Johnson and Warren Jones. In his operatic debut at Lincoln Center, Zach performed Tenor 1, the Rooster, in Stravinksy's RENARD with the Mark Morris Dance Group, conducted by Stefan Asbury. After three sold-out performances of RENARD, Morris re-hired the young tenor as St. Chavez and St. Stephen for his Spring 2012 production of Virgil Thomson’s FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. As a Vocal Fellow at Tanglewood in the summer of 2011, highlights included Stravinsky’s RENARD in a concert that also featured Yo-Yo Ma; a world premiere by composer John Liberatore coached by Dawn Upshaw; and concerts of chamber music by Ravel, Britten and Ives in Ozawa Hall. The young tenor was one of five singers invited back and he will continue his fellowship at the Tanglewood Music Center in 2012. Zach will also premiere and tour two new vocal works with orchestra in March 2012 by Tanglewood composers John Liberatore at Eastman University and Jesse Jones at Cornell University. Currently studying the Bach Evangelists with Rufus Muller, recent engagements have included the Evangelist and tenor arias in Bach’s WEIHNACHTSORATORIUM (Toronto Classical Singers) and the MASS IN B MINOR with the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra. Other recent credits include 'Tenor 1' in Beethoven's CHORAL FANTASIA at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Mozart’s REQUIEM IN D MINOR with the Toronto Sinfonietta. Hailed by Opera Canada for his ‘lovely light tenor', Mr. Finkelstein was selected as a 2011 Opera Valedictorian by the CBC to perform on 'Saturday Afternoon at the Opera' and also performed opera excerpts on Classical 96.3 FM. Recent opera roles include Belmonte, Tamino, Tito, Gonzalve (Ravel’s L’HEURE ESPAGNOLE), Pasquin/Silvio/Dr.Miracle (Bizet's DOCTEUR MIRACLE) and Charlie (Weill's MAHAGONNY SONGSPIEL). Zach Finkelstein graduated from the Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School in 2011 with an Artist Diploma in Voice Performance and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Political Science from McGill University ('05). He attended the 2010 International Vocal Arts Institute in Montreal, where he studied with Joan Dornemann and currently studies voice with Lorna MacDonald in Toronto and coaches with Martin Katz in Ann-Arbor.
