ANDREA NÚÑEZ
Praised for her "blinding brilliance," Canadian Soprano Andrea Núñez is establishing herself as a versatile and engaging artist. This season, Andrea returned to her home company of Opéra de Montréal to reprise her acclaimed Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni under the baton of Kensho Wantanabe.
Last season, Núñez appeared with Opéra de Montréal for Puccini’s La bohème (Musetta), and Pacific Opera Victoria for Portman’s The Little Prince (Water). Recently, Andrea marked several role and company debuts, including Susanna in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (Opéra de Montréal), Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni (Edmonton Opera), Elvira in Verdi’s Ernani (Voicebox: Opera in Concert) and Adele in Die Fledermaus (Toronto Operetta Theatre), where she was praised for her “sexy, funny” characterization (OperaRamblings) and “brilliant coloratura” (BarczaBlog).
Additional operatic engagements include Juliette in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette (Opéra du Royaume), Violetta in Verdi’s La traviata (Brott Music Festival), Governess in Britten’s Turn of the Screw (Orchestre de l’Agora), First Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute (Opéra de Montréal), Woglinde in Wagner’s Das Rheingold (Opéra de Montréal), and Frasquita in Bizet’s Carmen (Pacific Opera Victoria). On concert stages, she has performed with the Pax Christi Chorale, the Toronto Mozart Players, the Galileo Concert Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
No stranger to contemporary works, Andrea created the role of Pvt. Sonia Gonzalez in the world premiere of Huang Ruo & David Henry Hwang's An American Soldier (Opera Theatre of St. Louis), and Laura in the world premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain (Santa Fe Opera). With Opéra de Montréal, she performed as Alice B. Toklas in Ricky Ian Gordon's 27, and in the world premiere of Labrosse’s Flambeau de la nuit in double bill with Vaughn-Williams’ Riders to the Sea. She also recently completed a residency at New York’s National Sawdust, working with celebrated librettist Royce Vavrek and composer Vivian Fung on a cycle of songs centered on her identity and experiences as a Peruvian-Chinese Canadian, supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.
Andrea is an alumna of Opéra de Montréal’s Atelier lyrique, the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Artist Program, and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis Gerdine Young Artist Program, where she won the Richard Gaddes Career Award. An award-winning participant in many esteemed competitions, Ms. Núñez represented Canada at the Queen Sonja International Music Competition in Norway, was a semi-finalist at the Voix Nouvelles competition in Massy, France, and a District Finalist (Buffalo/Toronto District) at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She received the Roberta Peters Award from the George London Foundation, won the Toronto Mozart Project Vocal Competition, is a Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyrique Laureate, and a finalist in the Canadian Opera Company's Centre Stage Competition.
