NATHAN KEOUGHAN

Baritone Nathan Keoughan is a rising Canadian star to watch, praised for his “booming, rich voice”, and “charismatic, frightening, and empathetic” performances (Broadway World). Last season, Nathan made his unexpected Canadian Opera Company mainstage debut, starring as Karl Gustav in Bilodeau’s La reine-garçon, stepping in on a moment’s notice and subsequently performing the remainder of the run. Nathan returned to the COC this season for both Verdi’s Rigoletto as Marullo, and Rossini’s Barber of Seville as Fiorello.

Recent and upcoming engagements include Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Grand Philharmonic Choir and Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, his role debuts as Escamillo for Vancouver Opera’s Carmen and Danilo for Toronto Operetta Theatre’s Merry Widow, and joining Chorus Niagara for Bernstein’s Mass, where he received critical acclaim for his performance of the Celebrant. Nathan looks forward to returning to Opéra de Montréal in the 26/27 season for assignments in both their all-new production of Verdi’s Rigoletto, and Puccini’s Turandot, directed by Francesca Zambello.

With a particular passion for contemporary creation, Nathan has been at the forefront of several world premieres across Canada. His credits include multiple interpretations of works by composer Julien Bilodeau, most notably the leading roles of Karl Gustav in La reine-garçon with Opéra de Montréal (cover) and the COC, and Pink in Another Brick in the Wall, based on iconic Pink Floyd album. Nathan made his American debut with Cincinnati Opera as the jaded rockstar in Wall to critical acclaim, praised for his “commanding presence in this marathon leading role, singing for nearly the opera’s duration” (Bachtrack). In 2019, he reprised the role in Toronto at Meridian Hall. Additional operatic roles include Adler and Rabe in Braunfels’ Die Vögel (Canadian premiere, Pacific Opera Victoria), and Leo Stein in Ricky Ian Gordon’s Twenty-Seven (Opéra de Montréal). His discography also includes Tiefenbach’s The Long Walk Home, released by the Canadian Art Song Project, and a studio recording of Jeffrey Ryan’s one-act opera, The Laurels.

Keoghan’s cross-genre versatility has been showcased in over three-dozen performances with Sound the Alarm for their Canadian tour of Music of the Night: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. He also joined the Niagara Symphony Orchestra for the music of Rogers & Hammerstein, alongside musical theatre credits including Jean-Val Jean in Les Miserables.

On the concert stage, Nathan has performed Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Brott Music Festival and Les Chanteurs d’Avalon; Handel’s Messiah with the Menno Singers, the Confederation Centre, and Orchestre symphonique de Laval; Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the PEI Symphony; and Smyth’s Mass in D with Chœur de Laval. Other symphonic repertoire includes the Requiems of Brahms and Fauré.

An alumnus of Opéra de Montréal’s prestigious Atelier Lyrique, he has returned to the company for several cover assignments in following seasons, including Conte di Luna in Verdi’s Il trovatore. Prior to his time in Montréal, Nathan had his operatic start as an emerging artist in Calgary Opera’s McPhee Young Artist Program, after studies at both Boston’s New England Conservatory and the University of Prince Edward Island.
